The Bachelorette 2022 recap: 8 men go home, but 1 just won’t leave

LOS ANGELES – “The Bachelorette” Episode 2 begins with Gabby and Rachel lounging in one of the 28 rooms of their mansion on a gloomy LA day. They reflect on how crazy night one was and look forward to the week ahead. But there’s one big catch that could throw off everything they’ve planned; it’s raining.

I have to say that had to be the one most Conversation in LA when Rachel says, “How do we get her to show off her six-pack abs when it’s raining?” Luckily, the women find a plan to do just that.

Beauty Pageant – Bachelor Style

The 29 men who live in The Bachelor mansion are informed that they will be attending a pageant so Gabby and Rachel can interview them, see their talents and most importantly see them in skimpy leopard swim trunks look. Subtle ladies. Very subtle. Pageant winners can head to a very exclusive after-party to spend that much-coveted alone time with the ladies to really make them look their best.

With clipboards and pens in hand, the ladies watch as the parade of muscular men begins. Rachel tells us that Logan has been on her radar since night one and it definitely hasn’t changed. He introduces “the worm” as his talent and the ladies are delighted. Keep an eye on Logan!

Then we see a montage of a couple of guys who “never skip leg day” as they show off their bodies and many talents. Aven shows off his basketball skills while others do yoga and juggle. However, the most impressive talent definitely comes from Jacob, who says he can help them save $60,000 a year on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage. In this housing market, I think every single person’s ears have been perked up, and I may have even seen Jesse Palmer taking notes in the corner.

Chris sings as his talent, although unfortunately turns out to be somewhat deaf. Could this be a clue to his later behavior?

Once the pageant is over the winners will be announced and Aven, Logan, Brandan, Jason, Johnny and Colin are the lucky six men heading off to the exclusive after party/group date night.

The group date

This is probably one of the smaller group dates they’ve had this early in a show season, which was nice for Gabby and Rachel to really spend some time with the men and get to know them.

Unfortunately for Rachel, the night seems to start off on the wrong foot when Jason says he really does feel a strong connection with Gabby… oof. Unpleasant. It’s alright girl, you’ll get back on your feet.

Meanwhile, Gabby and Johnny sit down and seem to be having good banter as she delivers one of my favorite lines of the episode when she references the “beauty pageant” from before: “Welcome to the life of minimal clothing.” She really says, like her it looks! Johnny says he only got to kiss her on the cheek that day, so he goes for the full kiss and Gabby happily obliges.

Enter Rachel. The poor girl sees Gabby and Johnny kissing and that’s exactly what she doesn’t need right now. Things seem to be taking a turn for the worse as Rachel has multiple conversations with each of the men who she felt were just making small talk with her rather than flirting or connecting. Colin keeps saying that he is a big Harry Potter fan. I mean, so am I, Colin, but maybe don’t start with that if you’re trying to find your future wife.

Luckily, things take a turn when Rachel talks to Logan. He tells her he thinks she is very brave to get back into the process after her heart was broken. Their conversation goes well and the two share a nice kiss. Rachel says she really likes Logan. Yay Rachel! This might work for you!

But unfortunately, this is the problem that comes with having two bachelorette girls. Gabby next talks to Logan and they hit it off too and share a kiss. After that, the ladies have a little debrief and Gabby looks a bit disappointed when Rachel says she’s into Logan. Gabby keeps their kiss to herself…for now. See how this gets harder and harder as the weeks go by?

However, the night has a happy ending and Rachel gives Logan her rose while Gabby gives Johnny her rose. The other men do their best to hide their disappointment. Good luck next time guys.

Jordan V.’s first…. and last date with Rachel

From the very first night, it really seemed like Jordan V. and Rachel hit it off. She’s a pilot, he’s a racer – it just makes sense. Both can operate the main means of transport!

The two are heading to the airport, and I was instantly excited when I thought we were going to see Rachel fly, but instead the couple are going to have one of those zero-gravity experiences in an airplane. I think that ended in puke when Nick Viall and Vanessa went on the same date on Season 21 of The Bachelor, but the couple ended up getting engaged…so maybe that will apply to Jordan V. and Rachel too!

Not so fast. It seemed like the two were having a blast during the day portion of their date as they kissed and laughed, but things took quite a turn when we got to the evening portion. Rachel and Jordan sit down for a nice dinner and he begins to open up to Rachel about his childhood and why he is the way he is. He seemed so cute and Rachel even says he’s so perfect… but something’s missing. It’s like they always say, “Nothing counts before the ‘but’.”

Rachel returns to the table to break the bad news. She picks up the rose (I hate that they always do that, it’s so mean), tells him she can’t give it to him and sends him off. My heart really broke for Jordan! He seemed such a nice guy.

We then watch what was intended to be a romantic private concert for the two of them, but instead it just turns into a sad montage of Rachel and Jordan while Ashley Cooke and Brett Young sing in an empty room.

And we have a villain, ladies and gentlemen

Intercut with Rachel and Jordan’s date, we get an interesting conversation in the bachelor’s villa. Chris (the guy who “sang” as his talent during the pageant) tells the rest of the men that he plans to be in the final four and if he makes it into the fantasy suites it would be a deal breaker, if the woman he is interested in has sex with multiple people.

The group of men who were there for the interview seem quite shocked that Chris is already talking about fantasy suites and I think Hayden’s face really says it all if you watch the video clip in the player above is. Many of the other men comment that they feel Chris is being very controlling.

I think Nate put it best when he said, “You can’t have any prerequisites to love. It’s just a form of control that a lot of men don’t realize hurts good women.” Mic drop. Well done Nate.

Nate and Gabby’s single date

Nate arrives at Gabby and Rachel’s modest apartment (with its own helipad) and Nate and Gabby take off in typical bachelorette style in a helicopter for their first date. Of course, they happen to be flying over the bachelor mansion where the rest of the men see them flying over them. They “ooh” and “ahh” out of jealousy. Nate and Gabby wave at them from upstairs.

You’ll fly over some SoCal landmarks, including the Santa Monica Pier and the Hollywood sign, before finally landing on the tarmac: the perfect spot for a hot tub and some champagne.

Nate says he’s never felt chemistry with another woman so early. Gabby remarks that she thinks he seems very mature and jokes that she “never met a mature man”. He replies that Gabby also seems very grown up and he feels comfortable around her. They share a kiss while enjoying champagne and strawberries. It’s also at this point that I realize that Nate is wearing a pearl necklace, a daring choice with swimwear.

Fast forward to the evening portion of their date, where Nate shares an important detail about his life: He has a 6-year-old daughter. Gabby asks what she’s like and he says “she’s like the human form of coffee,” which is one of the best descriptions of a 6-year-old I’ve ever heard. But seriously, he says his daughter is like a “little me,” which is just adorable. Gabby admits to the cameras that knowing Nate has a daughter makes her wonder if she’s ready to be a mom and if knowing Nate has a daughter is a life she wants, but she doesn’t have to find out all that just yet.

Gabby picks up the rose that’s on the table and offers it to Nate. At least one of these single dates was a success!

cocktail party

The cocktail party starts with a toast from our bachelorette girls and Mario quickly whisks Rachel away for some alone time. As a reminder, Mario was Gabby’s first impression, so once again things get a little tricky as they’re both interested in the same guys.

Mario tells Rachel he’s a personal trainer and walks her through a series of workouts (in a dress and formal wear as much as possible). He does full squats while holding Rachel and she giggles like a little schoolgirl. Next, she has some time with Tyler and they share a kiss. Sparks are flying tonight!

Gabby and Erich are lounging on a blanket in front of the Bachelor’s villa and their hilarious banter from the previous episode continues. Gabby tells him his mullet looks awful. They also share a kiss.

Things seem to be going smoothly when, of course, the drama begins. Quincey takes it upon himself to bring up to Rachel what Chris previously said about fantasy suites. She’s justifiably upset that this guy, who she hasn’t even spoken to, is already looking forward to something as intimate as fantasy suites.

Rachel finds Gabby and tells her all about the situation with Chris. Gabby is also shocked and disgusted that he would already think this far down the line, so they decide to confront him.

Chris didn’t have a really good explanation for why he was talking about his own ultimatums when it came to fantasy suites, and honestly, Rachel and Gabby just seemed to have had enough. Rachel felt like she was “dancing around the topic,” and Gabby quickly put the hammer down, telling him it was time for him to go.

But that’s not all. About 3 seconds later, Chris decides it’s a good idea to go back and confront the men who raised this issue with the women. Dude… just go! Luckily, he was quickly turned off and escorted by the ladies…again.
