The best and worst car rental companies have been revealed – is your favourite affected?

The best and worst car rental companies have been identified in a new study.

Research conducted by whom? analyzed data from Zest Car Rental and responses from 2,700 members.

While the cost of renting a car is lower compared to this time last year, prices are up 77 percent compared to 2019 due to high demand and depleted vehicle inventories.

The Consumer Protection Agency compared the prices of over 8,000 rentals in nine destinations, including Italy, Greece and Spain.

The cost of hiring a car has more than doubled in three of the nine destinations, with prices up 100 percent in Cyprus and 126 percent in Italy.

In addition to the price increases: which ones? The company also polled 2,700 of its members to determine the best and worst car rental companies.

Members rated factors such as clarity of additional costs, age, mileage and condition of the vehicle, as well as customer service and value for money.

Auto Reisen and Cicar both came out on top and were awarded the “Which?” award. Recommended vendor status for this year.

Well-known names Alamo, Enterprise and Hertz shared third and fifth place respectively.

Meanwhile, Goldcar was hired by Which? Voted the worst car rental company. with a customer score of 54 percent.

Although the prices are among the lowest, the company only gets two stars for its value for money.

It also received two stars for ease of disabling optional extras and for customer service, as reported by multiple respondents
Commenting on print selling techniques to encourage customers to purchase additional insurance at the rental counter.

This problem kept popping up in responses from Goldcar customers. One said there was a “hard sell of insurance” that was “excruciating”.

Another said they felt the company was “obsessed with selling supplemental coverage,” while another respondent complained that it had “endured the tough selling that became almost menacing at times.”

Almost half of those surveyed (47 percent) said they were afraid of being exploited by their landlord.

A statement from Goldcar said: “Print sales are not acceptable. In terms of insurance coverage, we offer our premium protection to ensure a smooth process should a damage occur during a customer’s rental.”

“Of course, the customer has the right to purchase his insurance cover separately, but in this case he will be charged for any damage that occurs during the rental and he must then have the costs reimbursed by the chosen provider.” This will be explained to all customers at the time of rental.”
