One piece‘s motion pictures were generally good. Well, they used to be terrible until creator Eiichiro Oda started delving into them more, but generally they all ended up the same way – Monkey D. Luffy and his crew members, and maybe a few more popular characters teaming up to fight one new ultra-powerful non-canon enemy. but Red is different in almost every way, and for the better. It fills in Luffy’s backstory by introducing Uta, the daughter of One piece‘s most enigmatic character, Shanks. When tragedy separates them, today’s Luffy discovers she’s become a kindhearted pop idol bent on saving the world with her music – but at a sinister price. Red gives Luffy an opponent who isn’t overtly evil and one he can’t defeat by hitting him. The result is One piece‘s most introspective, unique film yet. And Uta’s songs are also absolutely amazing.
