The Best Black Turtleneck Is at Muji, Not Uniqlo

When the temperature drops below 60 degrees, my Pavlovian response is to run to the nearest Uniqlo. I salivate at the thought of wrapping myself in Heattech and affordable black turtlenecks. But this fall, something went off. Maybe it’s me, I don’t know. Saturn or whatever is probably something sinister in my chart. But I’m not attracted to Uniqlo turtlenecks the way I used to be! After being featured online, I visited the Soho store this week but the result was the same: They don’t do it for me anymore. The $50 sheep’s wool version is like something that costs $50. And the $129 version suddenly seems like too much for just one thing meh. I know! I’m sorry! I realize that this is the hottest time. Very controversial. Believe me, it hurts me to write this because I’m sure the United Nations can read it. But I have to tell my truth. And good news! After walking a few blocks south to Muji’s Soho store, I found an alternative – one that costs a fortune. even less.

For those of you who are new here, yes, Muji sells clothes other than gel pens and diffusers. I’ve been wearing these linen “bubble” pants all summer, and writer Hua Hsu agrees. However, I’ve never tried their turtlenecks before and was delighted to see them make a plain black one for just $40. Here’s what I like about it: The neck is tight but not super tendon so it doesn’t sag (I hate sagging neck). And it’s made of thin, washable, “itch-free” wool, so you won’t overheat when your building has a radiator on. The washable factor is key for me – I’ve ruined too many Uniqlo cashmere sweaters by throwing them in the wash. And if it gets really cold, I can always wear my trusty Heattech underneath. (Heattech remains undefeated.)

Maybe I will change my mind and return to my roots. Cashmere is definitely prettier and looks a bit taller. But in the meantime, I’m very happy with my $40 Muji and haven’t taken it since I bought it on Tuesday. (Today is Thursday.)
