The case for betting on the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2022

College football betting preview schedule

Thursday: Betting on Alabama
Friday: Betting on the state of Ohio
Saturday: Betting on Georgia
Monday: Betting on Clemson
Tuesday: Betting on Notre Dame

Tip: Ohio State wins the Big Ten (-215)

In the best case: The Buckeyes have CJ Stroud, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Treyvon Henderson. Is not this enough? This trio will lead an offense that should be better than last year and potentially near the historic level of the 2019 LSU Tigers. There’s probably no team in the Big Ten that can match — or even many defenses that can slow — an offense that averaged 8 yards per game and an offensive EPA of 23.2 PPG, almost seven points better than the next next Power 5 team. There are likely four or five top-15 opponents on the schedule, and all but Penn State are visiting Columbus, which theoretically gives the Buckeyes a huge advantage.

Worst case: What Could Hold Ohio State Back? A defense that allowed 953 yards against Michigan and Utah to end last season. What if moving to Jim Knowles as defensive coordinator isn’t enough to completely transform a unit that’s untested in a number of positions? Could the Buckeyes be vulnerable to a potential upset in a high-scoring affair? One can argue for almost any team, but what if starting quarterback Stroud is injured? Can backup Kyle McCord run a Texas Longhorn with Quinn Ewers and Florida with Jack Miller on offense at the level it takes to remain a national title contender? Ohio State has tough opponents at home, but remember the Buckeyes lost at home to Oregon as a double-digit favorite last year. Could it happen again?

bet spin: Play Ohio State to win the Big Ten at -215. Barring the unthinkable two conference losses or a home loss to undefeated Michigan in the regular-season finale, the Buckeyes should have a trip back to the Big Ten championship game. In this game, Ohio State will again be a double-digit favorite as they are likely to appear in every regular-season game, and will also be a much bigger favorite on the moneyline than -215.
