Companies already use The Game Awards to showcase related films and shows, but now the event will officially recognize those productions. The organizers have announced that the Game Awards 2022 will take place on December 8th with a new category “Best Adaptation”. Companies receive statuettes for any project that translates games into “popular media” including films, TV series, podcasts and books.
The event not only retains a personal component, but extends it to theater. The Game Awards offer a live “IMAX” experience in cities around the world. While more details are due in the coming months, expect a richer audiovisual presentation as you watch ceremonies and game trailers.
The creation of a customization category is not surprising. This year has seen a flood of gaming-inspired media, including long-nascent ones gloriole TV series, a well received one Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film and an expected (albeit unspectacular) Unexplored Movie. Of course, this gives The Game Awards a chance to capitalize on the trend, but it could also reward those studios that live up to the most popular gaming franchises.
