‘The Hair Tales’ on Hulu, hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross, explores Black women’s complex relationship with their hair

Black women and their hair have an ingrained connection, and Hulu has launched a new docuseries exploring this complex relationship, titled The Hair Tales.

Executive Producer Tracee Ellis Ross interviews celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Issa Rae and Marsai Martin about their unique hair journeys and how they find acceptance and self-love through their natural locks.

To promote the show, Hulu has partnered with Chicago’s Van Cleef Hair Salon to surprise customers with free services. Customers who came enjoyed music, mimosas and a hairstyle of their choice.

“They said, ‘You don’t owe anything today,’ and I said, ‘What?'” said client Mary Scott.

“Are you like what happened? How super surprised, super over the moon, super happy, feeling good,” said salon owner Antonia Marie Turner. “For example, it’s good to feel appreciated or to have something beautiful happen out of the blue.”

You can stream the first two episodes of The Hair Tales on Hulu right now.
