When Candy Richens landed a hair makeover from Alchemy Salon in Collingwood, Australia, she knew exactly what she wanted to ask for: hime cut. This hairstyle, which means “princess” in Japanese, is of historical origin and consists of straight front bangs and face, with the rest left long and straight down the back.
As W explained last year, the hime cut was a popular cut in the imperial court during the Heian period in Japanese history, when aristocratic women would let their hair grow to its maximum length. And now it’s back to the trending cycle, with K-pop girl group superstars like Momo from TWICE and Lisa from Blackpink representing the style. The Haim sisters also showed off hime cuts, as well as featuring samples from Prada’s spring 2021 ready-to-wear collection.
Meet the experts:
On social networks, the hime painting has attracted the attention of the TikTok audience because of its unique shape and interesting origin. Stylist and alchemist Becc Snow posted Richens’ makeover on the app, where it has been viewed more than 415,000 times.

Cut hime for whom?
A hime cut is not for the faint of heart. It’s a style that requires heavy maintenance and upkeep, especially for those of us with a bit of frizz or texture. No worries, though: most stylists insist that anyone can wear this style. Skip Fellers, owner and educator of the Neon Moon Salon in Asheville, North Carolina, makes a case for style versatility, “This hairstyle is best for anyone who loves to have fun and be regal. reinvent yourself,” Fellers said.
