The Jeffrey Dahmer Story Tops Netflix’s Viewing Charts

It seems like people are hungry for cannibalism stories because of Netflix Monsters: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer is officially one of the highest-grossing series of all time for the streaming platform. With Evan Peters As a serial killer known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, the series explores the true history of Jeffrey Dahmerone of the greatest monsters in United States history.

While traditional cable can measure popularity by knowing how many people turn on their TVs for a new episode of a given series, it’s more difficult with streaming. First, because streaming content is available on-demand, people can watch it when they feel like it, not just on the day and time it’s released. In addition, the number of hours watched is not a clear indicator of viewership, as some series are longer than others. For example season 4 of stranger things had feature-length episodes, which skyrockets the franchise’s total hour count for any person who chooses to watch the full season.

Given this context, one of the best ways to measure the success of a series is to divide the total number of hours watched by the total running time of the series. In this way we can better understand how many households have watched a programme. In case of Monsters: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer, the show has seen 496 million hours in two weeks. If you divide that by the 8.8 hour running time of the series, we have a total of 56 million households intrigued by Peters’ version of the cannibal killer. For comparison, Monsters: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer is only behind stranger things 4 for the title of the most watched English language series in a week. This stunning result validates the quality of the series and our collective fascination with serial killers.
