The journalist shares what he’s heard about Arsenal’s signing of a £113m player

Arsenal are currently not winning the race to sign Joao Felix.

The long-term future of the Portugal international at Atletico Madrid is in doubt.

There is no doubting Felix’s quality as the Spaniards spent £113m to bring him to Madrid in 2019 [Mail].

But in recent years the 23-year-old hasn’t developed in the way some might have hoped and now Arsenal are reportedly keen.

According to 90 Min, Felix was offered to the Gunners.

However, The Express’ Ryan Taylor has told Give Me Sport that despite mounting speculation, Mikel Arteta and Edu are not favorites to sign the player, who would demand a “massive fee”.

He said: “It’s not true, at least I don’t think so, as far as I understand it. Joao Felix is a player who is obviously admired by many clubs. You only have to look at his performance against Switzerland to understand why – obviously young too.

“The reason I say Arsenal are not favorites is that while Atletico want to sell, which has been made clear by their CEO, they will be looking for a massive fee for Felix.”

Joao Felix to Arsenal

It would be a fascinating transfer, to say the least, but remember the north Londoners need a number nine above all else.

With Gabriel Jesus sidelined until March, Arsenal need to sign a striker during the January transfer window.

And talented as Felix is, he’s neither a traditional centre-forward nor robust enough to fill the void Jesus left in the Premier League.

It’s a nice idea, but you can probably file this under “doesn’t happen”.

At least not yet.
