The Last Of Us Part I: What Do You Think Of The Remake’s Visual Upgrades?

During his Summer Game Fest Showcase, Geoff Keighley was about to surprise reveal The Last of Us Part I, the long-rumoured remake of the 2013 title. However, PlayStation apparently had other (random) plans as the publisher leaked everything about Part I hours before its official reveal let.

Keighley and The Last of Us director Neil Druckmann were recording with PlayStation during the showcase, and it was clear the pair were upset by the leak. Nonetheless, The Last of Us remake is real and is out on September 2nd. With all that being said, fans have started focusing on the Part I visual updates, which seems to have divided the community.

Some people love the new look and visual upgrades. Joel, Ellie and others look more like The Last of Us Part II versions of themselves, maybe even better. However, others don’t feel these visual upgrades are necessary, citing how impressive The Last of Us (and its 2014 remaster) already are. Then there’s the $70 price tag – are these Part I upgrades and updates worth the price of a brand new first-party Sony title, or should this game have been a little cheaper?

Personally, I think the $70 price tag is a bit high as it is today, but I think the potential for this to be worth that price is very much there. Druckmann told Keighley that Part I isn’t just about the looks. The studio has overhauled the combat, significantly improved the AI and runs at 60 frames per second (or at least has a 60fps mode).

As someone who was rerunning The Last of Us in 2020 leading up to Part II, those aspects, particularly the AI and combat, were showing their age. I’m glad Naughty Dog revised them. If Part I was all about graphical fidelity, I’m not sure I’d agree with the $70 price tag. But if those other changes are as significant as Druckmann said, then I’ll be fine with them. Of course, it remains to be seen how Part I ends.

But enough about me. I want to hear from you! What do you think of this new edition? Is it impressive, or do you think the original visual fidelity of The Last of Us was so good that it minimized that of Part I? How do you feel about the price of $70 – is it acceptable or too high?
