The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has secured its release date along with a new cinematic trailer.
Gollum’s video game solo outing kicks off September 1st on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The Switch version will be out sometime during the year.
The game was first announced in 2019 and was originally scheduled for release in 2021 before being pushed back to this year. The story follows the books by JRR Tolkein rather than the Peter Jackson film trilogy and details Gollum’s events in the first chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring after losing the One Ring to Bilbo Baggins. Gollum embarks on a journey through Middle-earth, visiting places like Mirkwood and Barad-dûr.
In terms of gameplay, Gollum is a stealth adventure game where players can sneak through environments and choose to dodge or attack enemies. The choice comes down to whether you give in to Gollum’s malicious nature or the more timid tendencies of his other personality, Smeagol. Climbing and platforms are also a big part of the experience, as players can scale structures and add verticality to exploration.
