Kyiv – Outside the Giraffe shopping mall on the western outskirts of the Ukrainian capital, a group of locals prepared to meet the column of Russian tanks thundering towards them.
It was the end of February and the Russians of an elite airborne unit sat on their vehicles as if expecting a warm greeting. One wore a Cossack wool cap instead of a helmet. Another had not loaded his gun.
