Located just south of Plymouth in Plymouth Sound, Drake’s Island is already welcoming tourists.
Day trippers traveling to the island can book a guided tour to learn about the island’s history, wildlife, and paranormal activity.
Morgan Phillips bought the island in 2019 and had ambitious plans to turn the land into a holiday resort.
He told the Westward Shipping News: “Like most people in Plymouth, I stood on Plymouth Hoe and at various points in the Sound and looked at Drake’s Island and thought I’d really like to go there and look at that and see what’s on it .
“I actually had to buy it to do that.”
While the transformation of their dream resort was thwarted by the coronavirus pandemic, the team were able to welcome holidaymakers to the island for a great day trip.
In a recent interview, the businessman reiterated his desire to turn the island into a luxury resort.
According to the island’s website, there will be a luxurious wedding venue, a conference center and an education center.
The old barracks will also be converted into a budget hotel.
The Drake’s Island website states: “Our plans center on our passionate desire to regenerate Drake’s Island and breathe new life into the existing historic buildings.
“The resort’s beauty and heritage lends itself to a prime development to take full advantage of its prominent position.
The development is not expected to be completed until 2027 and will cost around £22million.
Councilor Richard Bingley has backed the plans, Plymouth Live reports.
He said: “It’s fantastic to see these new uses developing and it was the jewel in the crown but it was very unexplored.
“I’m really happy that there are now a number of initiatives to attract people and hopefully we’ll get a hotel or two there in the longer term.”
Drake’s Island isn’t the only UK venue set to undergo refurbishment in the coming years.

A theme park dubbed ‘UK Disneyland’ is set to open in 2025 – although plans were scaled back last December.
And a tiny island in Scotland has been dubbed a hidden gem.
