If pathological optimists still think the United Nations Human Rights Council cares about human rights, they may want to take note of last week’s events. A proposal was made in Geneva to debate China’s abuses of the Uighurs in Xinjiang province, and the panel voted 19-17 not to even discuss it.

On China’s side against this action are regular minions like Cuba and Venezuela, as well as countries like Nepal, Indonesia and Pakistan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates who don’t want to offend China or participate in the Belt and Road Initiative. The U.N. Abandons the Uyghurs
