These Apps Will Keep Your EV from Running Out of Juice

This community participation means you can check ratings and reviews for charging stations and get real-time updates on their current status. When it comes to making sure you never run out of battery, the app guides you straight to the most convenient charging station near your planned route or wherever you happen to be.

ChargePoint

ChargePoint allows you to filter stations based on various criteria.

The ChargePoint app for Android and iOS provides access to the more than 160,000 charging points managed by ChargePoint itself, as well as stations from all other major networks. There’s no step-by-step navigation here, but you can easily find nearby charging spots and get updates on how many charge points are free.

You can even get the app to ping you when a specific charging station becomes available. When you use real ChargePoint chargers, you get additional features like the ability to start charging with a tap on your phone and detailed readings of your EV charging activity and costs.

Most electric vehicles (and many gas-powered cars) currently come with manufacturer-branded apps. The in-app dashboard often has tools to direct you to compatible charging points when needed, and you’ll get regular updates on how much battery life you have left and how far you’re likely to go. You may find that you can rely on this app alone to get you where you want to go without running out of juice, and if so, great!

For example, with Ford electric vehicles, you can use the FordPass app for Android or iOS: just select view chargers from the home screen, then select the relevant filters. You can perform a similar search from your car’s dashboard by going to the navigation screen and then tapping To where? and picking Charger from the options that appear on the display.
