He’s going on a mental break, y’all – and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Shawn Mendes has announced the cancellation of the rest of his world tour, telling his fans, “I need to take the time that I personally never took to ground myself and come back stronger.” Here’s what you need to know.
The 23-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter has been touring North America as part of his Wonder World tour and was set to do shows in Europe and the UK next year. In a post on Instagram, Mendes confirmed that he is canceling the rest of his tour dates to focus on his health.
This is the reason Shawn Mendes canceled his world tour
Mendes wrote: “As you know I have had to reschedule shows for the last few weeks as I was not fully prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take. I started this tour excited to finally be able to play live again after a long hiatus due to the pandemic, but the reality is I wasn’t prepared at all for how difficult touring was going to be after this time.
After speaking more with my team and working with an incredible group of healthcare professionals, I have come to realize that I need to take the time that I personally never took to ground myself and come back stronger.”
He continued: “Unfortunately I have to cancel the remaining tour dates in North America and UK/Europe. We had hopes that I would be able to continue with the remaining appointments after some much needed time off, but at this point I have to put my health first.
That doesn’t mean I won’t be making new music and I can’t wait to see you guys on tour in the future. I know you’ve all been waiting so long to see these shows and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but I promise I’ll be back as soon as I’ve given myself the right amount of time to heal.”
He also said, “I love you all and thank you all so much for supporting me and sticking with me on this journey.”
The Grammy winner, who rose to fame in 2016 with his song “Stitches,” has previously spoken candidly to fans about his struggles with mental health and fame. In an open letter to fans posted to social media in April, he said he felt “overwhelmed and overexcited” but was afraid to admit it if people “think less of me.”
