The plan was first established in 2021, renewed for a second time in the March 2022 budget, a third in November, and a fourth in the spring 2023 budget.

This program is available to help the lowest income earners with the increasing cost of living.

Each council receives a different share of funding depending on the size of the catchment area, population and need.

Coupons or grants offered vary by location, so you’ll have to check what you can get and how the council will pay you.

You usually need to be on a low income to get help.

For example, thousands of Derby residents can get free supermarket vouchers worth up to £120 depending on their circumstances.

What does the council offer and who is eligible?

Local governments have had some autonomy over how they use the Fund to reach vulnerable people in their communities.

Eligibility requirements will vary depending on where you live – so check with your council directly to see if you can get cash help.

For example, residents who are eligible for the Derby living scheme can earn between £80 and £120.

Families can get help during school breaks.

Online application forms are now available to Derby residents.

However, you will need to provide proof of interest on your most recent bank statement to be eligible for assistance.

Successful applications will receive a one-time voucher payment in the amount of:

  • £120 for households with children
  • £100 for a couple
  • £80 per person

The council’s website says families can claim free school meals, for £15 per child over the summer break.

The support will come in the form of vouchers, offered through schools, with one payment in May and another in July.

The voucher can be redeemed at any combination of these supermarket chains:

  • Aldi
  • Asda
  • agricultural
  • Iceland
  • Marks and Spencer
  • Morrisons
  • by Sainsbury’s
  • Tesco
  • wait

What if I don’t live in Derby?

Your local council will likely have its own version of the plan and you should contact them to learn more.

For example, thousands of Cornwall residents could receive £160 in support.

Subscribers will receive two £80 payments directly into their bank account.

Those who live in Medway in Kent, can apply for support up to £210.

Eligible households can receive food and energy bill coupons.

Check with your local council to see what support is offered.

What other help is available?
