TikToker discovers Grandmother’s dusty vintage dress is $43k Dior gown

One lucky TikToker turned to the internet for help evaluating one of her grandmother’s old dresses – and the dress turned out to be an actual ’40s Dior.

The internet can be a magical place. With social media connecting the whole world, people all over the world can ask others for help with any kind of problem – whether it’s playing a video game to see if they’re overreacting to a problem in their life, or in the Fall of this woman to appreciate her grandmother’s dress.

TikTok user Adeline Vining is a true fashionista. She often uploads videos of her styling outfits and even trying on dresses from her mother’s closet, transforming older garments into modern fashion statements.

However, one item of clothing has always escaped her attention – a black, strapless dress that belonged to her grandmother.

@adelinevining Really blown away to call this dress mine but I’ve waited 25 years to wear it 😭💔 #ootd #vintagestyle #christiandior #vintagecouture #couture #styling #grwm #storytime #ballgown #dior #50s ♬ Little ones Things – Adrian Berenguer

Vining says she found the dress in her grandfather’s attic after he died… and paid particular attention to the tag that said “Dior.”

Initially, the TikToker had a hard time getting someone to appreciate the dress or even confirm that it was the genuine item. Vining contacted Dior 12 years ago to no avail.

So she turned to the internet for help and managed to get in touch with one Henry Wilkinson, a London-based fashion historian.

According to Wilkinson, the dress is most likely an earlier design by Christian Dior. “The hourglass silhouette was reminiscent of his revolutionary ‘New Look’ that began in 1947,” he said in a statement to Zenger.

He suspects it’s probably from a 1949-1950 fall collection and found another dress that is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art just like this one, as seen in another video by Vining.

That’s not all; he also appreciated the value of Vining’s dress $36,000 to $43,000.

Although Vining shared a video of herself in the stunning dress, she was able to find a photo of her grandmother wearing it to a dance at a party. One of her viewers even went out of his way to colorize the image, resulting in a memorable snapshot.

Despite being warned against wearing the dress by another fashion historian, she’s tempted to don it for a possible photoshoot…or even for a single evening out on a fancy occasion. Maybe the Cannes Film Festival?

Cannes Festival Proposal Comment Vining

“Especially after this week’s revelations, I feel like maybe I CAN wear this. With gratitude, respect and love to my grandmother and mother,” she wrote.

This is just the latest sane moment spawned by TikTok, where a woman recorded herself asking Robert Irwin – as well as his adorable answer.
