TIME Person of the Year 2022: Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine president, honored by magazine

TIME magazine named Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian leader whose attempt to repel Russia’s invasion of his country has won wide acclaim, as its Person of the Year alongside “the spirit of Ukraine.”

“Whether the struggle for Ukraine fills one with hope or fear, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stirred the world in a way we haven’t seen in decades,” Edward Felsenthal, TIME’s editor-in-chief, said on Wednesday.

“In the weeks after the Russian bombs began falling on February 24, his decision not to flee Kiev but to stay and rally support was fateful. From his first 40-second Instagram post on February 25 – showing his cabinet and civil society were intact and in place – to daily speeches delivered remotely to houses like Parliament, the World Bank and held at the Grammy Awards, the President of Ukraine was everywhere,” added Felsenthal.

Zelensky’s unlikely career path has taken him from comic book actor to wartime president in a matter of years. He became President of Ukraine in April 2019 at the age of 41 after spending his earlier years as an actor, starring in romantic comedies and co-founding a successful TV production company.

He found new fame after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February when an international audience saw his impassioned video addresses on the streets of the shell-ravaged capital Kiev, where he remained despite intelligence information suggesting he was a prime target of the Russian invaders US offer to evacuate.

“The fight is here; I need ammo, not a ride,” he told the US, according to the Ukrainian embassy in the UK.

Felsenthal said “the spirit of Ukraine has been embodied by countless people inside and outside the country.”

“To prove that courage can be as contagious as fear, to inspire people and nations to unite in defense of freedom, to remind the world of the fragility of democracy – and peace – are Volodymyr Zelensky and the Spirit of Ukraine TIME Person of the Year 2022,” said Felsenthal.

Zelensky succeeds Elon Musk as the 2021 TIME Person of the Year. Russian President Vladimir Putin was the 2007 TIME Person of the Year.

The title is not necessarily given as an honor, but indicates that the winner had an impact on world affairs.
