Tragedy has dragged many Henrys to the past in The Time Traveler’s Wifesecond episodein which Theo James’ character relives the horrific death of his mother in a car crash when he was only 8 years old.

Young Henry left the car just seconds before the accident took his own life, but his mother was tragically beheaded right in front of Henry’s eyes. Caught in a moment as important as gravity, Henry of different ages converges on painful memories. Sketching them all in sequence “is a bit less of a challenge because there are so many Henrys at different points,” James told TVLine. “We shot those scenes for almost the entire month we were there. We’ll do a little bit here, a little bit there. ”

Instead, “a little difficult” for James was the ending scene of the episode, in which 28-year-old Henry listens to a recording of the opera singer’s mother answering a question from Clare, which the much older Henry has sent to his mother in the past. “It was a big moment for him,” James said. “Through time travel, he can control most events. So his mother then spoke to Clare, who is now the most important person in his life. To imagine someone who passed away many, many years ago, when he was eight years old, echoes through the ages, so painful and so moving. I want to do that justice. “

To bring realism to Henry’s harrowing journey and how he copes with his mother’s death, producer/executive director David Nutter taps into his own past. “It’s really important what happens to a child who has actually experienced such an incredible loss at such a stressful time,” Nutter said. “My father died in a car accident when I was one and a half years old, so I was too young to feel that. But I’ve tried to put that into practice, and also really come to terms with the fact that something like that never leaves you and it never fades or never becomes a distant memory. great, especially with Henry, who basically relives it every day of his life.”

Finding the right young actor to deal with the character’s childhood trauma alongside James as an adult was also key. “This child, [General Hospital vet] Jason David, walked in and he looked like a spitting image of Theo,” Nutter recounts. In fact, the resemblance between the two actors is so strong that in one gallery scene, “there’s a picture of a young Henry, and one of the pictures is actually young Theo, not young Jason , and I bet you can” t tell which one it is. “
