Tottenham Hotspur are one of several clubs eyeing James Maddison for a potential move in January transfer sales. Newcastle United are also interested in the Leicester City ace.
That’s according to ESPN, which reports that Maddison has a number of potential suitors who are interested in his situation. Leicester were reluctant to lose the England midfielder in the summer. But manager Brendan Rodgers could now consider conceding the 26-year-old.
The Foxes manager is keen to expand his roster during the winter window but needs to raise funds first. So Rodgers’ resistance to Maddison’s departure could soon be fading, freeing the one-cap Three Lion to secure a move. However, any change in his stance will please Newcastle.
Tottenham are interested in a transfer for Newcastle’s top target Maddison
Maddison is one of Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s top targets ahead of the January transfer window. The Toon manager gives the £24million former Norwich City ace high ratings as he seeks to keep the Magpies in the mix for Europe. The St James’ Park side were also targeting a deal this summer.
According to Chronicle Live, Leicester turned down a £50million bid from Newcastle for Maddison’s transfer during the off-season. But the Toon remain enthusiastic and some of their England stars even used the World Cup to get the Coventry native excited about an exciting project which Howe is now leading.
Now, however, Newcastle could face competing interest in Tottenham’s Maddison if they seek his January transfer from Leicester. Spurs are among a host of rival contenders eyeing the attacking midfielder. He has seven goals and four assists in 14 games this season.
Maddison has sparked for Leicester to earn his recall from England
All of Maddison’s goal contributions have come during his 13 Premier League games. His success follows a 12-goal, 8-assist premiership campaign spanning 35 games last season. He had not previously scored more than eight goals or provided more than seven assists in a high-profile tenure.
Also, Maddison’s creative streak caught Gareth Southgate’s attention ahead of the World Cup. The Three Lions boss had not called up the midfielder for a single team since his debut in November 2019. But Maddison would not play a second until Qatar 2022.
Nonetheless, Tottenham have joined Newcastle in securing Maddison’s transfer from Leicester in 2023. A move that would excite former Toon midfielder Darren Ambrose if Antonio beats Conte Howe and signs Rodgers’ star creator in the near future.
“For my part, and I’m sure you feel the same way, we all know where he’s supposed to go. I would love to see him at Spurs,” Ambrose told talkSPORT. “But he was fantastic at Leicester. He got into England’s World Cup squad by playing for Leicester and Brendan Rodgers.”
