Travis Scott makes first major public appearance since Astroworld at Billboard Music Awards 2022

Travis Scott appeared for the first time in public since the Astroworld tragedy at the Billboard Music Awards 2022 tonight (May 15).

A mob at a Houston festival run by the rapper left 10 people dead last October.

Scott has only had one gig since the tragedy, appearing at the E11even nightclub in Miami earlier this month (May 8). The rapper was on stage for about 45 minutes, performing some of his most popular songs like ‘Goosebumps’ and ‘Sicko Mode’. Migos’ Quavo also joined Scott on stage to perform their 2017 single ‘Dubai Shit’.

During tonight’s BBMAs, the star performed two songs, rapping from inside a storage box, covered in a white coating. Scott also wears a white t-shirt, along with beige trousers. He has aired versions of ‘Mafia’ and his James Blake collaboration is ‘Lost Forever’. Watch the performance below.

BBMAs 2022 host Diddy said in the days before the ceremony that he was directly involved in Scott getting the gig. “I made a request. I made a request. I said, “My brother Travis Scott has to perform,” he said. “And NBC said yes.”

In an interview with Billboards, the host talked about how both Scott and country star Morgan Wallen had reservations for the event. Wallen was banned from the ceremony last year after footage of him using a racial slur surfaced online.

“Travis has experienced a tragedy; Morgan [used the N-word] while talking to his boy. Everyone makes mistakes. Now we are continuing with love and respect for all those hurt or affected. It’s time to forgive,” he explained.

“So that Morgan and Travis can come back and touch the stage again with the mindset of getting a second chance at life. Everyone in the room got a second chance at life, you know, because we went back outside without the mask on. We need love and I’m excited to celebrate that.”

The majority of the awards at the Billboard Music Awards 2022 were presented during a pre-show live stream on TikTok. Entering the ceremony, Olivia Rodrigo and Kanye West led the winners with six awards each.

The Weeknd has the most nominations at the 2022 BBMAs with 17 nominations, with Doja Cat trailing behind at 14th. She took home the first award of the main ceremony, taking home the trophy for Top R&B Artist .

Diddy opened the awards ceremony with help from Bryson Tiller, Jack Harlow and Teyana Taylor, before Silk Sonic brought a cover of Con Funk Shun’s ‘Love Train’ to Vegas. Latto also made his debut at the awards ceremony with a performance of ‘Big Energy’.

Other performances tonight will come from the likes of Machine Gun Kelly, Florence + The Machine, Ed Sheeran and more. Morgan Wallen’s performance was quickly criticized by viewers as “voiced deaf”, he took to the stage shortly after messages about social justice and anti-racism.
