Treasury Likely to Prevent U.S. Investors From Receiving Russian Debt Payments

BONN, Germany — Minister of the Treasury Janet Yellen said the United States would potentially prevent American investors from receiving payments on Russian debt, a decision that could push Russia into default.

For now, the US has introduced an exemption, which is due to expire on May 25, in the sanctions campaign against Russia to allow the payment of sovereign debts. Without it, banks and investors would not be able to process and receive bond payments made by the Kremlin, potentially leaving Russia insolvent for the first time since 1918.
