Tropical Storm Alex Heads Toward Bermuda With Wind, Rain (VIDEO)

Alex strengthened across the Atlantic after his trek through Florida, where he flooded roads.

Tropical Storm Alex, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, headed for Bermuda Monday after inundating parts of Florida and causing three deaths in Cuba.

Alex strengthened some over the Atlantic after becoming a tropical storm early Sunday as it moved across the Atlantic after migrating through Florida, where it flooded roads in some cities and stranded motorists in some cities on Saturday.

The US National Hurricane Center said Alex had weakened and experienced maximum sustained winds of 65 mph early Monday. Further weakening was expected on Tuesday. It was centered about 140 miles northwest of Bermuda and moving east-northeast at a brisk 28 miles per hour. That movement is expected to continue until Tuesday’s storm is absorbed.

The storm was expected to pass north of Bermuda on Monday. A tropical storm warning was in effect on the island, with forecasters saying there could be 1 to 2 inches of rain from late Sunday through Monday.

Bermuda National Security Secretary Michael Weeks said emergency services were monitoring the storm.

The storm system had previously killed three people in Cuba, damaged dozens of homes in Havana and cut power in some areas, authorities said.

Parts of South Florida experienced street flooding from heavy rain and winds on Saturday.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said the storm tested the system of drainage pumps that the city recently installed, as climate change has made flooding in the low-lying area a growing problem.

“We moved the water away pretty quickly, but of course it was really challenging in some areas,” said Gelber.

Alex partially emerged from the remnants of Hurricane Agatha, which made landfall on Mexico’s southern Pacific coast last week, killing at least nine people and missing five as it made landfall.

The storm’s onset was unusually early for the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially began last Tuesday, but it’s not unprecedented for Florida.
