Trump says FBI searching Mar-a-Lago estate

WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump said in a lengthy statement Monday that the FBI was conducting a search of his Mar-a-Lago home.

The circumstances were not immediately clear. FBI and Justice Department spokesmen did not respond to messages seeking comment Monday night.

“Having worked and cooperated with the appropriate government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate,” Trump said in his statement.

The Justice Department has investigated the discovery of file boxes containing classified information that were brought to Mar-a-Lago after Trump’s presidency ended. It was not clear if the FBI search was connected to this investigation.

A separate investigation related to efforts by Trump allies to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6, 2021 riots at the US Capitol has also intensified in Washington.
