ISTANBUL — A Turkish court has upheld the prison sentence of a prominent leader in the country’s largest opposition party, intensifying its crackdown on opponents of the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the longtime leader faces a tough re-election next year.
The cassation court in Ankara on Thursday approved an earlier verdict against Canan Kaftancioglu, leader of the Istanbul branch of the Republican People’s Party (CHP). She was sentenced to 4 years and 11 months in prison for insulting the Republic of Turkey and defaming a public official in connection with her social media posts, some of which date back to 5 years. 2013. She will also be banned from politics for her proximity.
