Twerking, Twinkies and cigarettes: Reddit users reveal the ‘guilty pleasures’ they hide from their spouses

(NEXSTAR) – Married people never keep secrets from each other. Unless they absolutely do.

Couples in committed relationships are well aware that privacy can be difficult, especially when they’re living together. Almost nothing is a secret – and that includes ATM numbers, phone codes, and even TV shows they streamed while the other was asleep.

So it’s not uncommon for so many people in fulfilling relationships to seek a little privacy for personal interests or guilty pleasures, if only for a few moments each week.

How do we know this? Well, thousands of these people recently revealed their secrets in a Reddit thread that raised the following question: “What is the guilty pleasure you hide from your lover?”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, some of the most common answers involved food. Some commenters claim that their partners don’t like the same foods, or can’t eat them due to allergies or intolerances.

“My husband is gluten sensitive,” explains one user. “If he eats pizza regularly, his stomach will hurt for a few days after that. Well, I don’t, so sometimes I say I’m going for a jog, and I run… to the pizzeria, have a bite, and run home.”

Another user, whose child is allergic to eggs, said she couldn’t eat one of her favorites – Twinkies – for fear of causing an allergic reaction in her child.

“Sometimes, when I want a muffin full of eggs, I’ll go grocery shopping alone, eat a pack of 2 Twinkies and sit in the car before driving home,” she wrote. “Then I wash my hands and face and mouth in the outdoor sink before going inside to continue my mother’s duties.”

In addition to food, many users claim to be engaging in secret hobbies or hangouts without their partners knowing.

“I’ve been writing stories for years now, sometimes she thinks I’m working on a computer but I’m actually writing a story,” one Redditor stated. “There’s nothing to hide but I just keep it to myself… I’ve written 56 stories.”

Another Redditor said he sometimes tells his wife he’s at work, in fact he’s calling sick so he can hang out with friends all day. “It’s really the only way we can all come together reliably,” he said.

Some people said they prefer fantasy, fiction or role-playing games.

“Prior to [my partner] going home, I want to believe that I am a warrior princess and I use a fake sword to kill enemy soldiers,” one user said.

Not all revelations are so tame, however. Some users appreciate reckless behavior more, such as a woman who claims that she prefers to “walk around the house naked” when her family is not at home or someone else cultivates a hobby secret.

“When no one is home, I listen to my music,” she said. “I love feeling sexy when I dance. I would even practice dancing the whole dance on the kitchen chair… I told him many times when we went to dance that I didn’t know how to grind, shake or do any kind of dance like that.[,] mainly because in front of people, I know I look like an idiot. “

Among the thousands of other replies, some Reddit users admitted to secretly gambling or smoking cigarettes, and a surprisingly large number said they intentionally stayed up later than their partners, just to Get some alone time.

“I love my life partner. She is amazing. I would be devastated if she had to leave my life,” wrote one user. “BUT HOLY HELL, WHO I LOVE.”
