Twitter’s $3 subscription is now $5 per month. The social network sent out an email notifying existing subscribers that Twitter Blue has increased its prices for new members, but as an early adopter, the monthly amount they pay will remain the same until October. In the email Written by Social media consultant Matt Navarra and first discovered by The edgethe company said early adopters will also be notified at least 30 days before the new monthly price goes into effect on their accounts.
The company didn’t elaborate on the reason for the price increase, only saying in the email that it will help Twitter develop new features that subscribers have been asking for, improve those already in place, and fulfill its mission of promoting journalism support to maintain. It also says it’s currently creating a “smoother reading experience” and introducing new experimental features to Twitter Blue Labs for those who choose to stick with it even at the higher subscription price.
Twitter launched its subscription service in the US back in November, unlocking additional features for the site’s most dedicated users. Some of its features can be really useful, including the ability to undo tweets, which is the closest thing to an “edit” button at the moment. It also allows members to browse news without ads and gives them access to the latest features the site is testing.
In its earnings report for the second quarter of 2022, Twitter said that the number of regular users on the site had increased sharply. The bad news was that it didn’t make more money for the company. It posted a net loss of $270 million, which it attributed to the economic downturn and uncertainty surrounding the Elon Musk acquisition. If you recall, back in April, Musk offered to buy Twitter for $44 billion and the social network was quick to accept, but they’ve been at odds ever since. In July, Twitter sued Elon Musk for trying to back out of the acquisition, and now the two parties will face each other in an accelerated five-day trial beginning in October.
