Since the beginning of Elon Musk’s Reigning on Twitter, he has threatened to remove legacy verification – denoted by a white tick in a blue circle next to the account name –before his tenure. Musk even set April 1st as the date for the purge, which came and went with no changes, either due to ineptitude or a half-hearted April Fool’s joke. But on April 20th—4/20, lol, ugh—he actually did it.
Almost all of the estimated 407,000 old verified Twitter accounts have lost their ticks. The only exceptions were newly introduced Twitter Blue subscribers – and a few confused celebrities, including Stephen King and Lebron James. Musk later said he personally pays for their subscriptions, which none of the stars seem to want.
As with all of Musk’s controversial changes to the internet’s most popular/least popular social media site, Twitter responded with a delicious array of memes. Scammers also seem to jump at the opportunity to impersonate prominent figures and organizations who have lost their ticks.
