U.K. Braces for Biggest Strikes in Years Over the Holiday Period

LONDON — The UK is about to face some of its worst strikes in at least a decade, raising fears that a “winter of discontent” will hit the country as workers demand a raise more amid double-digit inflation and a gloomy economic outlook.

College professors, teachers, railroad workers and even security guards at luxury department store Harrods have staged strikes recently. Nurses of Britain’s state health service are threatening to strike for the first time on select dates near Christmas and ambulance drivers have voted for the first time in 30 years. Passport control officials also announced strikes in December at several UK airports.
