The 142nd edition of the US Open tennis tournament begins Monday and the final Major of the season will offer an air of nostalgia and absence at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY
For Serena Williams, a six-time winner of this event, it will be the last professional tournament of her prolific career. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion finished in the bottom half of Thursday’s tournament draw and her first opponent will be Danka Kovinic of Montenegro.
Iga Światek of Poland, a two-time French Open winner, is the women’s No. 1 and meets Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the first round. Defending champion is Emma Raducana from Great Britain.
The No. 1 in the men’s draw is defending champion Daniil Medvedev of Russia, who will face Stefan Kozlov of the USA in the first round. Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who has won 21 Majors, will not play at the Open as he has not been vaccinated against COVID-19.
2nd seed Rafael Nadal of Spain opens the game against Rinky Hajikata of Australia.
