Mike Kofman rejoins the show to update us on the war in Ukraine. In this episode (taped just before Russian forces withdrew from Snake Island), he explains that by focusing on the limited territorial exchanges in Donbass, we may be overlooking the larger strategic picture. Kofman argues that Donbass is not the area of greatest importance in this war. Instead, he points to Cherson, which he sees as much more important in terms of future battles and its greater strategic and economic value. Mike and Ryan also cover a variety of other topics, from Russian ammunition withdrawals from stockpiles in Belarus, to Russian and Ukrainian struggles in mobilizing personnel, to the mirage of capability-based analysis. He concludes with some thoughts on what defeat might look like for Ukraine.
