Ukraine may soon get advanced, mid-range air defense system

According to a report by CNN on Monday, the US government appears on the verge of sending an advanced medium-range air defense system to Ukraine.

A source familiar with the decision told CNN that Washington plans to announce later this week that it has purchased an advanced medium-to-long-range surface-to-air missile defense system for Ukraine.

When exactly the new air defense systems are to be delivered is not yet known.

According to some reports, such as one from The Times of Israel, the US is buying NASAMS, an anti-aircraft system developed by Norway, to provide medium and long-range defense.

Just last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that his country needs a more modern air defense system after a series of deadly attacks on the capital Kyiv and the regions of Mykolayiv, Chernihiv and Lviv.

Ukraine operates air defense systems and missiles of Soviet origin, some donated by neighboring countries.

Air defense systems in service are aging, and obtaining spare parts and expertise to keep them in service has become more difficult with time and rising tensions. Kyiv needs western-made artillery, drones and air defense weapons to defend against Russian attack. Ukraine may soon get advanced, mid-range air defense system
