University City Townhomes sale: Residents protest outside low-income homes that are set for demolition in University City

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Protesters setting up camp in the University City neighborhood of Philadelphia were ordered to evacuate the camp Monday morning.

The group set up tents in University City’s townhomes on 40th Street near Market earlier this summer.

These tents were removed around 9am amid protests.

The protesters expressed their concerns about the upcoming sale and demolition of the townhouses.

A group of tenants and housing activists set up more than a dozen tents in the yard.

They say the occupation protest is a visual representation of what could happen if residents were evicted.

Local residents we spoke to say they don’t want to go. The 70-unit complex has been providing low-income housing for families in West Philadelphia for 40 years

“This is our declaration of defiance,” said resident Melvin Hairston. “People are getting up. We’re not taking that, we’re not going to let you run us over and get us out of here.”

The management group, Altman Management Company, has announced plans to sell the property. They will also end their affordable housing contract.

There are plans to demolish townhouses and convert them into a larger and more expensive development.

Action News has reached out to the management company for comment.
