Update After Queen Elizabeth Laid To Rest Beside Prince Philip

According to British Royal News, the Queen was buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle alongside her beloved late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. A service followed with members of the royal family singing hymns and paying their last public respects to the Queen after a day of ceremonies in London and Windsor. Here’s what you need to know.

According to new reports, the lowering into the royal vault was the last time the Queen’s coffin was seen by the public. She was officially buried at around 7.30pm Monday at a private event alongside her husband Prince Philip. When the Duke died 17 months ago, his coffin was placed in the Royal Vault at St George’s – ready to be taken to the memorial chapel when the Queen died.

The Queen’s coffin will be buried along with the Queen’s Company of the Grenadier Guards’ Camp Color – a smaller version of the Royal Standard of the Regiment – which the King placed on top of her coffin at the end of the funeral service. The private funeral was also held at St George’s Chapel but no members of the public nor cameras were allowed. During the first service, the Imperial crown, orb and scepter were removed from the Queen’s coffin by the Dean of Windsor.

The final hymn was sung as the King prepared to drape the Queen’s Company of Grenadier Guards’ camp color onto the coffin. Once in place, the color was then accompanied by the Lord Chamberlain’s baton, which he symbolically broke. The purpose of breaking the wand is to create symmetry with the three instruments of state removed from the coffin – all symbolizing the end of the Queen’s reign.

The simple service was led by David Conner, Dean of Windsor, who, as the coffin was lowered, recited Psalm 103, which contains the traditional line: “Go out on your journey from this world, O Christian soul.” The service ended with that the Sovereign Piper played the lament A Salute to the Royal Fendersmith from the door between the Chapel and the Dean’s Cloister, the music fading as he walked towards the Dean’s Office.
