Update As Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Assassinated During Campaign Speech

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated on Friday while campaigning for a candidate in the country’s national elections. Video surfaced on social media showing the moment Abe fell to the ground, bleeding from gunshot wounds to his neck and chest. One of the bullets pierced his heart.

The 67-year-old was taken to Nara Medical University Hospital, where doctors tried to save his life but were ultimately unable to save him. Abe was pronounced dead just after 5 p.m.

Police allegedly arrested gunman Tetsuya Yamagami, who was charged with attempted murder, before Abe was even pronounced dead. Police recovered a homemade gun that the suspect had used.

Abe ran a campaign in support of Sunday’s election for Kei Sato, a current member of the upper house who is running for re-election. He was less than a minute into his speech when he was shot.

Shockingly, Japan has one of the lowest gun crime rates in the world due to its strict laws. Japan reported just nine gun-related deaths in 2018.

Abe was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, elected to two terms from 2006 to 2007 and 2012 to 2020. In 2020 he resigned for health reasons.

President Donald Trump and President Barack Obama both had close ties to Abe.

This is truly a shocking moment not only for Japan but for the whole world. We wish Abe’s family and friends all the best during this difficult time.

Rest in peace Abi.
