Neighbors sign off with a bang. In fact, even actor Stefan Dennis says he “surprised himself” when he got incredibly emotional on the final day of filming on the long-running Australian soap opera. Here’s what you need to know.
The actor, who played the villain Paul Robinson, said it was “a melancholy day” as he recalled experiences from the past 37 years, including encounters with the British royal family. The show first aired in 1985 and follows the lives of the people who live and work in Erinsborough, a fictional Melbourne suburb, with Dennis as one of the original cast members.
Neighbors signed off with an emotional bang
Last week was the final day of filming for the globally acclaimed soap. The Australian soap opera first aired in 1985 and follows the lives of the people who live and work in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough. The final episode of the soap will “celebrate the most memorable characters from many eras.”
Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, who starred as ’80s power couple Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell, were previously announced as returning to the show. They are joined by Peter O’Brien, who appeared as Shane Ramsay in the first episode of the series, Ian Smith, who played Harold Bishop, Mark Little as Joe Mangel, and Paul Keane, who played Des Clarke. Smith said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be back. I’m the biggest sook under the sun. I’ll shock the last night Neighbors airs. It will truly be the end of an era and I’m so proud to have been a part of it.”
Following speculation in The Sun over the weekend, Channel 5 confirmed the show will no longer air on the station “beyond this summer”. As many fans probably already know, Neighbors has launched the careers of the likes of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, and Margot Robbie. A channel spokesman said: “After this summer, Neighbors will no longer air on Channel 5. It’s been a hugely popular part of our schedule for well over a decade and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and the entire production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series. Of course, we also want to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbors over the years.”
The statement also said: “We are aware that this decision will disappoint, but our current focus is to increase our investment in original British dramas, which are very appealing to our viewers.”
