Upper Southampton Township fire kills one, multiple animals dead

UPPER SOUTHAMPTON TWP., Pennsylvania (WPVI) — Upper Southampton Township Fire Brigade are seeking answers related to a house fire that has killed one person and several animals.

Just before midnight on Friday evening which rolls into Saturday, a fire consumed a house on Wendy Drive in Upper Southampton Township.

In surveillance video obtained by Action News, you can see the blaze and police scrambling to alert neighbors to evacuate.

“I couldn’t even get down my street, the whole street was cordoned off,” neighbor Tim Donovan said. “There were neighbors everywhere, police everywhere, fire engines.

Ten firefighting companies responded to a “much advanced” fire on the first and second floors.

“We already had fires through the roof and fires from the second floor windows and one fire from the first floor by this point,” said Glenn McKenney, Upper Southampton Township Fire Chief. “It was well involved when we got here.”

Firefighters said they were having trouble getting to the front of the house because of the overgrown brush, so they had to cut into the neighbor’s fence to gain access to the backyard. Officials call it a heavy content house, meaning there was a lot of content in the front and back yards, making it difficult to fight the fire.

“That was a really intense fire, I mean the conditions were unbearable even for firefighters to be inside,” McKenney said.

Officers got the fire under control in about two hours but stayed on site for four hours. They discovered a body and the bodies of several animals in it.

“It’s just really sad and you don’t see that stuff that much,” Donovan said.

Neighbors call the situation tragic and some believe it could have been prevented.

“It may not have spread like it did because it happened so quickly because of all that stuff, and if you look in the backyard there’s a bunch of stuff they swept out,” neighbor Michelle Lubrant said.

Officials aren’t sure if there were any working smoke detectors at the time because the home was so badly damaged.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
