Urbanista unveils ANC earbuds with a light-powered charging case

has unveiled its latest earbuds, and you may never need to toss a charging brick in your bag when traveling with them. That’s because the Phoenix buds have a charging case with Exeger’s solar cell material. The company says this can charge the case’s battery with any type of indoor or outdoor light.

According to Urbanista, the earphones offer eight hours of playback time. The brand says the charging case also has a total battery reserve of 32 hours. The Phoenix charging case looks a lot bigger than cases for other true wireless earbuds, which probably ensures there’s enough surface area for the solar cell material.

The earbuds support hybrid active noise cancellation (), along with noise-cancelling microphones and a transparency mode. They feature multipoint connectivity, which means you can connect them to two devices at the same time. You’ll have access to touch and voice controls, as well as more extensive customization via the Urbanista mobile app. There’s also IPX4 water resistance.

Urbanista previously used Powerfoyle technology in its . Upon trying it out, we found that direct sunlight could charge them faster than the battery drained from playback. However, the headphones charged much more slowly in ambient light.

It’s unclear who might be able to take full advantage of the Phoenix buds. If you’re outdoors a lot and can expose the case to direct sunlight while using the headphones, you might never need to connect the USB-C cable to charge the battery. At the very least, it’s an intriguing product that offers a glimpse of another potential use case for the solar cell material.

They are available in black or pink. A set costs $149/£129/€149.
