US vs. Iran World Cup: Christian Pulisic scores goal and then exits knockout stage clincher

Doha, Qatar — In a final game of the World Cup group stage, the goal-hungry United States scored the crucial result they needed to beat Iran and advance to the knockout stages of the 2022 tournament.

US star Christian Pulisic scored the only goal to make it 1-0 for the Americans in the 38th minute on Tuesday. Pulisic, a Pennsylvania native, then fell into the goal area, writhing in pain as teammates both celebrated and worried.

The 24-year-old was pulled from the game and replaced by Brenden Aaronson.

With only one win needed to progress, the USA had to rely on goal security against the Iranians, who started the game by beating Wales and losing to England.

The Americans, who missed out on qualifying for Russia 2018, started Tuesday with a 1-1 draw with Wales and a goalless draw with England.

Wales v England, the other remaining Group B game yet to be played that day, was held at the same time as the USA v Iran game. The English won 3-0 and progressed as well.

USA, who return to the knockout stages for the first time since 2014, play the Netherlands on Saturday.
