Various fights lead to nearly a dozen arrests at Academy Park High School

SHARON HILL, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — It was a county-wide police assist at Academy Park High School around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning

Various fights broke out inside and outside the school in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania, resulting in the arrest of at least 10 students, with more arrests expected in the coming days.

The 10 arrested so far face charges ranging from aggravated assault to causing or endangering a disaster.

“It was just too much. There were too many people in one area. There were about 600 people in one area,” said Tobias, an 11th grade student.

“I was desperate,” said parent Armenda Pettey. “I mean, I’m working at my desk and my daughters call me and they’re like, ‘Mom, mom, mom, get up here.’ And they’re scared to death.”

The fighting took place after a peaceful student protest in the auditorium. Students protested the Southeast DelCo School District’s decision to ban hooded sweatshirts and hats.

“Schools have said we can’t wear the hoodies, but we kids don’t like that because we love wearing our hoodies and shirts,” said student Randy Baker.

“We thought it was unfair and too fast,” said Tobias.

This was decided by the school board at its meeting on October 27th.

“By wearing my hoodie, I can hide my face when I’m doing something sneaky, when I’m making bad decisions, instead of being a scholar in the building,” a representative said at the meeting.

The policy went into effect on Monday.

After the student protest, Sharon Hill Police said students had started damaging property at the school and fighting had broken out.

“I feel like I wish it could have stayed peaceful so we could really get our message across because now I feel like since they start fighting, they’re not going to listen to us,” Tobias said. “They’ll think we’re not serious or whatever.”

Action News reached out to the school district and high school for comment, but no one returned our calls.
