Mary J. Blige’s iconic status was officially announced at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.

The Power Book II: Ghost the star was honored with the BBMAs’ coveted Icon Award during Sunday’s ceremony on NBC.

And who better to receive such a title? Blige boasts an incredible 10 to 10 record at the BBMAs, having won every title she’s ever been nominated for, including Female Artist of the Year in 2006.

Blige begins: “What the world is like now, I think people think icons are born that way, and they become legends overnight,” Blige began. “But that is definitely not the case. It takes a lot of time, hard work and a lot of challenges left to achieve greatness. For me, being an icon means overcoming obstacles to achieving the impossible and being wildly admired for influencing countless people – and that’s what I stand for. ”

Janet Jackson’s rare television appearance to present Blige’s award is merely the cherry on this musical puff pastry. Blige told her: “You have always been one of the biggest inspirations for us to grow up.

Recent BBMAs Icon Award recipients include Pink (2021), Garth Brooks (2020), Mariah Carey (2019), Janet Jackson (2018), Cher (2017) and Celine Dion (2016). Icons, all.

In addition to Blige, this year’s lineup includes Becky G, Burna Boy, Dan + Shay, Ed Sheeran, Elle King, Florence + the Machine, Latto, Machine Gun Kelly, Maxwell, Megan Thee Stallion, Miranda Lambert, Morgan Wallen, Rauw Alejandro, Silk Sonic and Travis Scott. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were originally scheduled to perform, but the band had to step back “due to unforeseen circumstances” less than a week before the big show.

There were even big names stepping on the podium to present the trophy. This year’s host list includes Anthony Anderson, Anitta, Chloe Bailey, Dixie D’Amelio, DJ Khaled, Dove Cameron, Giveon, Heidi Klum, Liza Koshy, Michael Bublé, Pusha T, Teyana Taylor and Tiffany Haddish.

As for actual awards, The Weeknd leads this year’s table, entering the ceremony with a whopping 17 nominations. Doja Cat follows closely behind with 14 nominations, while Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Olivia Rodrigo all receive 13.
