Video shows a man being verbally abused by a deputy who collapses on the motorway before being fatally hit by a car

The man’s family called for “the prosecution and dismissal” of the officer who verbally abused him; although prosecutors have declined to press charges.
Bodycam footage of a fatal traffic stop released by both authorities and the dead man’s family shows the moments leading up to the death of 28-year-old Brent Thompson.
According to the Larimer County Sheriff’s OfficeThompson, 28, was pulled over by Larimer County Deputy Sheriff Lorenzo Lujan on February 18 for driving an expired vehicle.
In video of the stop released to the public this week, Thompson – who said he did not have a driver’s license with him – first identified himself as “Jacob Jones” before authorities quickly realized he had given the wrong name .
Warning: While the moment of impact is not shown, the image below is disturbing to view.
Just as they were about to arrest him, calling him “Brent,” Thompson fled off a side street toward the interstate. As Lujan pursued him on foot, he shouted at Thompson to stop and warned him that he would be verbally abused. After Thompson jumped the barrier to I-25, Lujan used his taser while Brent was already on the road, causing the latter to collapse. Video released by the sheriff’s office ends with a car speeding toward his motionless body as Lujan exclaims, “S—, s—!”
A longer version of the video published for NBC reveals that Thompson was handcuffed after being run over before being dragged off the road and subjected to CPR.
“A taser was deployed to stop him from endangering innocent motorists,” the sheriff’s office said. “Unfortunately, Mr. Thompson was hit by a passing vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the hospital despite life-saving efforts by relief workers and rescue workers.”

While Lujan was on leave following the incident, the prosecutor was conducting an investigation concluded that no criminal charges would be brought against him. In his report, prosecutor Gordon McLaughlin said that “although the outcome of this decision was tragic … the use of the taser was probably the only use of force at his disposal” to prevent Thompson from crossing the freeway.
McLaughlin also said that Lujan’s “failure to fully assess the immediate danger of oncoming freeway traffic was a clear miscalculation.”
While he added that by using the taser after Thompson was already on the street, the deputy “exercised poor and ultimately questionable judgment,” the prosecutor also said that “the decisions were made in a split second were not taken with bad intention”.
He has since been allowed to return to patrol Washington Post.

Thompson’s family has called for Lujan’s “prosecution and release” and also reportedly intends to file a civil suit. “This man took responsibility for pulling the trigger and incapacitating my child for five seconds,” his father said NBC. “Look downstream, there’s a car coming!”
“If you insult someone on a freeway, that’s a death sentence. That’s the way it is by definition,” said Siddhartha Rathod, one of the attorneys representing the family CBS. “They know what’s going to happen, which is they’ll get run over by a car.”
“It’s not even the kind of situation where the officer should be pursuing anyone. He knew who he was. It was a criminal offence. It was a traffic violation,” Rathod continued. “And just following someone on I-25 is dangerous enough. It’s dangerous for drivers. But harassing someone on I-25 is insane and criminal.”
In a statement, Sheriff John Feyen said: “As first responders dedicated to helping others, in every situation we grieve at the loss of life. This incident is no exception and several lives have been changed forever. Nobody wanted this result. I have.” met with the Thompson family and their representatives. The loss of a loved one is heartbreaking and I am truly saddened by the loss they are suffering.”
Another lawyer representing the family said the Denver Gazette They believe the sheriff’s office is “more intent on defaming Brent’s name” after revealing they found drugs in both Thompson’s body and the vehicle after the incident.
