Videos of warplanes, firing drills not from Pelosi Taiwan visit

Since Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, two videos have circulated online claiming to show military exercises during her visit, but the videos date from 2020 and 2021.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Aug. 2, becoming the highest-ranking American official to visit the self-governing island claimed by China in 25 years. In response to Pelosi’s visit, China announced it would conduct military maneuvers in retaliation for her presence.

While China was making these announcements, various social media posts claiming to show videos of US and Chinese forces conducting military exercises were circulating online during Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

VERIFY investigated whether two of the most viral videos are real.

Does this video show Chinese ships conducting live missile firing drills during Pelosi’s visit?

The video, which was posted several times, has thousands of views on Twitter and Facebook.

That's wrong.

No, this video was not taken during Pelosi’s visit and it does not show Chinese ships conducting a missile exercise. It was taken during a Taiwanese military exercise in 2020.

Using RevEye, a reverse image search tool, VERIFY was able to confirm that this video was posted almost two years before Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

The video was released by two different Chinese news outlets in November 2020.

Taiwanese news channel EBC News uploaded the video to YouTube on November 6, 2020. From 12 seconds into the video you can see the same sequence of events that were seen in the video that is currently going viral.

On November 13, 2020, Chinese media company Tong Media posted a 55-second video on Facebook. At the 22-second mark, you can see the rockets flying through the air, mirroring video that circulated during Pelosi’s visit.

The 2020 Facebook post, written in Chinese and translated via Google Translate, read: “Fireworks show? The Taiwanese army’s live ammunition drill drew people to watch as the shells passed directly over their heads, which netizens mocked [people online]. Recently, residents of Matsu took photos of the Taiwanese Army’s live fire drill on the main street. This scene attracted many nearby residents who stopped to watch and take photos. However, the shells at the scene flew right over people’s heads and hit the sea not far away, prompting netizens to call out the danger. More netizens quipped straight away: Are you sure it’s not fireworks? (Source: Haike News)”

Haike News is a news application that allows individuals to upload content and send it to the news agencies.
So we can VERIFY that this footage was taken nearly two years before Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan and shows Taiwanese ships launching the missiles, not Chinese ones.

Does this video show US Navy warships and Air Force planes conducting drills off the coast of China ahead of Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan?

The same video was posted multiple times on Twitter and has more than 100,000 views combined.

That's wrong.

No, the video was not recorded in 2022 and is at least from 2021.

Using InVid, a video forensics tool, VERIFY was able to separate the individual frames of the video into still images. Using RevEye, VERIFY was then able to find several instances where the video was posted before Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan.

The video was posted to YouTube on April 15, 2021. The post states that it was taken from the western Philippine Sea. This Facebook post from April 15, 2021 also says that he is from the Philippines.

VERIFY has reached out to the Navy and Air Force to confirm the exact date.

While we have not been able to VERIFY the exact source of the video at the time of publication, we can confirm that it is not from Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
