Viola Davis has achieved EGOT status

Viola Davis took home the 2023 Grammy for Best Audiobook, Best Narration and Story Recording, making her the latest artist to achieve EGOT status. That is, someone who has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award.

As the only female nominee in her category, Davis beat out Jamie Foxx, Mel Brooks, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Questlove to win the Grammy for her memoir Find me. It was also her first Grammy nomination.

In recent years, Davis has received an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series How to get away with murder, an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in fencesand two Tony Awards: Best Featured Actress in a Play for King Hedley IIand Best Actress in a Play for fences.

“I wrote this book to honor six-year-old Viola,” Davis said in her brief acceptance speech. “To honor her, her life, her joy, her trauma, everything. And it was just such a journey.

Davis’ performance probably feels particularly gratifying after her film The Woman King received no Oscar nominations this year, a move many saw as a clear snub(Opens in a new window). Untilanother black story with black creatives, also missed out on nominations, with both films reigniting conversations the lack of diversity of the Oscars.

This Grammy makes Davis the 18th person, after Jennifer Hudson, to achieve an EGOT(Opens in a new window) in 2022.
