Russia’s long-term success in the economic struggle with Europe is seen by both sides as crucial in deciding the outcome of the conflict in Ukraine. But signs that Putin’s economic strategy is struggling have coincided with serious battlefield setbacks, as Ukrainian forces retake parts of Russian-held territory and the Russian president has been forced to acknowledge Chinese and Indian leaders’ concerns about the invasion.
