Steven Spielberg is the highest-grossing director of all time, receiving fame, recognition and three Academy Awards for his work on high-profile feature films. But three-minute music videos shot with a cellphone?
The Jurassic Park director made his music video debut with Marcus Mumford’s new single “Cannibal” on Thursday. The Mumford and Sons lead singer confirmed the news on Twitter and Instagram, sharing a photo of the 75-year-old director, seated in a wheelchair anchored by his wife Kate Capshaw, pointing his phone at the singer.
For the record:
4:52 p.m. July 18, 2022A previous version of this article said there was no word on when the “Cannibal” video would be out. It was released on July 14th.
“On Sunday, July 3, Steven Spielberg shot his first music video in a single shot on his cellphone in a high school gym in New York,” Mumford said wrote in a Twitter thread. “Kate Capshaw was the almighty Dolly handle.”
“I have been overwhelmed by the support from those around me in bringing you this music and I cannot hope to express all of my gratitude,” he added. “When people get it, it blows my mind. Kate and Steven just got it and I can’t thank them enough.”
Don’t expect Spielberg to be ending his film career anytime soon though – his semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film The Fabelmans is slated for release on November 11th. Meanwhile, Mumford will release his solo album Self-Titled on September 16th.
