Police arrested brother Daniel Palmer III last week. But he died just a few days later.
Daniel, who was charged with the brutal assault on his sister Wanda Palmer, was called uncooperative by law enforcement when they attempted to send him to jail after an initial trial.
Now officials say he’s dead.
Daniel died in a hospital Thursday night after spending five days in prison.
Palmer, of Jackson County, West Virginia, has been charged with the attempted murder of his sister Wanda in 2020 after he allegedly hit her in the head and face with a hatchet or axe.
It was Wanda’s mother who called 911 after it happened.
“They came Wednesday morning to mow her grass and they found her in a big pool of blood and they ran real quick up the hill on a quadricycle and told us,” said her mother, Eileen Palmer. “I called the police and an ambulance.”
Wanda was found in her living room.

“We show up and see her on the couch. Bloodied and bruised in the head, beaten in the head and face with clubs,” said Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger.
They thought she was dead, but then heard what is commonly referred to as a “death rattle.”
“I wouldn’t have bet a dime on her life that morning, she was in such bad shape,” added Sheriff Mellinger.
But Wanda was alive.
According to the criminal complaint, a witness saw Wanda’s brother in their trailer that night, and investigators said there was a history of violence between them.
However, law enforcement had no gun, no eyewitness to the attack, and no phone records or video. Also, Wanda was in a coma until she woke up in her nursing home about three weeks ago, the sheriff said.
After waking up, she told investigators that the attacker that night was her own brother.
“That she can wake up and say the name, thank God. That’s all I can say, thank God,” said Wanda’s friend Messi Powers.
“In this case, it’s really about the toughness, the strength and the stamina of the victim themselves,” Sheriff Mellinger said.
From the start, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department told CNN that Daniel was so uncooperative that they couldn’t get a brand new mugshot of him and he wouldn’t sign the paperwork that would allow an attorney to represent him.
Now the question is, wouldn’t he cooperate, or could he not cooperate because of a disease no one ever knew existed? His attorney and litigator Ryan Root told CNN he would look into it and always said Daniel was in bad shape, unresponsive and basically alive on the machine at the hospital.
