Chelsea director Thomas Tuchel has said that the club have conducted extensive talks with Barcelona targeting Cesar Azpilicueta over his future in west London. The German hinted that Azpilicueta could leave in the summer but admitted that he wants the Spaniard to stay at Stamford Bridge.
Azpilicueta, 32, moved to Bridge from Marseille in the summer of 2012. Since then, he has had many decisive performances and won every trophy with the club, emerging as a club legend.
Delighted with the veteran’s output, Chelsea recently activated a one-year extension clause in his contract. However, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill linking the Spaniard with a move to Barcelona (via Fabrizio Romano).
Tuchel admits that Azpilicueta’s future is uncertain and that many factors may have influenced his decision-making. Speaking to Chelsea’s official media, the German strategist said:
“We’ve had a lot of talk like that because I think he feels like he’s won everything after the Club World Cup, so I can understand these thoughts, that maybe a cycle has ended. Then there was also a change of ownership, and he only played under this owner, so maybe that raises his second thoughts on his situation. ”
Although Tuchel did not explicitly take Barcelona’s name, he acknowledged the involvement of another club, saying:
“His renewal kicked in at the same time, and he loves the club; He loves a challenge, and he loves being here. He is our captain; we are still in dialogue, and at some point we are also selfish as it is not our responsibility to solve any other club’s problems or fulfill any other club’s wishes “.
Chelsea manager Tuchel wants Azpilicueta to stay
With both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen refusing to extend their contracts, Chelsea are widely considered to be without two first-team defenders next season. Losing Azpilicueta in that case would be a huge blow, something Tuchel wanted to avoid.
The former Paris Saint-Germain coach says he understands the right-back’s views, but hopes he will consider completing his contract. Tuchel added:
“Given the fact that we’ve lost key defenders, it’s not an ideal scenario to think about losing Azpi, although I can understand his personal view.”
“At some point, if you’re a legend like him, you deserve it for me and the club to look at it a second time, to see if there can be an exception from the rule, and we’re still in the process (that he’s staying), and he knows this, but we’re still negotiating to find the ideal solution.”
Since joining the Blues in 2012, Azpilicueta has made 475 appearances across all competitions, scoring 17 goals and providing 56 assists. He has won two Premier Leagues, one Champions League, one FA Cup and two UEFA Europa League titles, among many others.
